| Hello duke
I also live in the North of England, and I've been playing for about 4 years.
However, my handicap is only hovering around the 20 mark.
I only took up the game at 55, so I shouldn't expect to make much more progress.
Nevertheless, I'm planning some lessons after Christmas, so who knows what 2008 will bring.
Best Wishes,
Albert Ross

| Welcome Albert. Having a handicap of 20 means that you've already gained significant improvement since starting, so there's likely to be more there. It amazes me how few golfers put any emphasis on their short game i.e. 25 - 50 yards out, and yet that is the area where most golfers can improve their handicap.
Next time you're out playing just do a quick tally of how many strokes you lost because your chip didn't land close enough for an Up 'n Down, or a long putt didn't get close enough to hole out or the how many putts within 3-4 feet that you could have sunk had your putter been hot. You'd be surprised, but you'd be looking at at l east around 5 strokes, if not more. That could be 5 shots off your handicap just by improving that area.

| Hello Monty
Many thanks for your welcome.
You are absolutely right about our short game.
I read a recent article by Justin Rose, in which he said that he spent 30% of his practice time on his long game and 70% on his short game.
I suppose if a Professional golfer applies that rule of thumb, then so should we.

I have added an update to my original posting last year "how can I improve the consistency of my putting" in the Golf Tips forum, maybe this will be of interest to you
