I was recently reprimanded by my playing partner for popping my ball - which was a hair's breadth out - into the hole using the back of my putter. She told me it was against the rules to use the back of the club. Is that true as I can't find any reference to it in the Rule Book?

There is no rule that states that a ball must be hit with the face of the putter, in fact, the putter is the only club where two faces are allowed, as long as they are identical and opposite each other.

The rules state that the ball must  be struck with the club-head and, with respect to putting, the alignment of a players stance is also relevant in that  you cannot straddle the ball and hit it.

Thank you for that - my putter does only have one face - the other is totally different - but I presume it was still OK to pop it into the hole with the reverse side?

Yes, there is nothing in the rule book to say that you can't; the only criteria is that the ball must be struck with the club head.
