| Today a bizarre situation has arisen for which there is no definitive answer in the Rules of Golf and for which several different interpretations of differing rules could be applied.
I was part of a golf society of 24 players, who were playing in Stableford format. Before commencing play we were informed by the club professional that the 12th and 13th holes were currently closed due to yesterday's heavy rain, but the greenkeeping staff were working to try and get them open before we reached that part of the course.
On reaching those holes, there were no signs up saying the the holes were closed, but the Mens tee markers were placed together, thus not defining a teeing off area, but the Ladies teeing off markers were set in place. There were no white competition tee markers anywhere on the course.
Some of the players played the holes, whilst others bypassed them and moved onto the 14th.
On everyone reaching enquiry was made of the Professional was made as to whether the holes should have been open, to which the reply was "Yes".
A heated discussion then ensued as to what was to be done regarding these two holes. The options appear to be:
1. The players who missed out the holes are disqualified under Rule 6-8, Discontinuance of Play;
2. The players who missed out the holes are disqualified under Rule 11-4 Playing from Outside the Teeing Ground;
3. The players who played those holes are disqualified under Rule 11-4 Playing from Outside the Teeing Ground, as they all played from the side of the tee markers placed together;
4. The players who played those holes are disqualified under Rule 7-2 as they are deemed to have Practised before playing the 14th;
5. Rule 33d (Course Unplayable) applies and the result is deemed null and void;
6. Rule 1-4 (Points Not Covered by Rules) applies and the Committee should come to an equitable decision.
Which of these options should apply and if you think option 6, what equitable position should be taken? |
