| Recently I took part in a stableford competition at our local club. My playing partner didn't enter his score in the "markers" column on the card he kept for me, and didn't initial a change he made in my score. We both signed the card and handed it in and there were no questions.
Later when cards were checked I was disqualified from the competition, because my playing partner hadn't entered his score or autographed the change in the score on one hole. Is this what should have happended?
Also, to rub salt into the wound, the pro cut my handicap because I played below my handicap and he decided that although I was disqualified from the competition he was going to take note of the score I got.
So I guess the question has two parts:
a) Should I have been disqualified in the first place?
b) If I was disqualified, should my score have been used to cut my handicap?
Thanks
Bill

| | Hi Bill, before I can answer this I need a little bit more information. 1. For the hole that was corrected what was the incorrect score entered and what should it have been? Also, when you submitted the card had the correct Stableford points been entered (after correction)? 2. How many points did you score on the card submitted? 3. What was your Exact Handicap prior to the event and how much was your handicap cut? |

| Sorry I got the competition type wrong, it was a medal on a par 27 9-hole short course (don't know why I said stableford!).
In answer to your questions:
1. The score on the hole was 4, corrected to a 6 when I pointed out the error.
2. Gross score of 37
3. Can't remember precise handicap to decimal places, or precisely the cut in handicap. The result meant I went from 22 to 21.
Don't worry too much though, I am not taking this too seriously just a bit of banter with the pro as I am the first ever to be disqualified in a competition on this fairly new course.

| Hi Bill,
There is nothing in the Rules that require a marker to put his score on the card he is marking.
It is DEFINITELY not a disqualification issue.
Never be afraid to ask to be shown the Rule.
There is nothing in the Rules that states alterations must be initialed.
In fact - see Decision 6-6a/6 (In the R&A Decisions book) below.
Dec. 6-6a/6 - Requirement That Alteration on Score Card Be Initialed
Q. May a Committee require that alterations made on score cards be initialed?
A. No. Nothing is laid down in the Rules of Golf as to how alterations should be made on a score card.
As long as a score card has :-
the players full handicap recorded
the players gross scores marked
the signature of the marker
the signature of the player
The requirements of the Rules are satisfied.
It is the Committees responsibility to add the scores and apply the handicap.
See Note 1 following Rule 6-6 d.
Regards,
ShaweH |
