| I've only taken up golf a few months ago and slowly starting to learn about the game. One question that I have which I hope someone can help me with is to do with golf balls. I realise that there is a vast range of golf balls out there but what I don't understand is why do manufacturers make golf balls specifically for ladies, is there a reason for this, or is it just a marketing gimmick?

| As far as I know, ladies balls are softer. As women generally have a slower , less powerful swing this allows the ball to compress more thus giving more distance.
Hope this helps.

| Hi Duke. Thanks for the reply, I'm intrigued to hear that ladies balls (pardon the expression ) are softer to enable them to be hit further. I recently moved over to using men's golf balls thinking that they might go further, as distance is a problem in my game at the moment. I think I'll need to experiment with different balls to see how much they differ.
If anyone else has got tips that would help me hit the ball further (other than getting bigger muscles) that would be appreciated. |

| Your size shouldn't be an issue.
Distance is a variety of things.
Swing speed, tempo, timing are just a few.
Have you had any lessons?

| Hi,
I've tried a few 'ladies' balls out there, and didn't like the feel at all!
Having tried a few of the 'mens' ones (all price ranges!), i feel that i do have more control of the ball with the 'soft feel' ones. Now, i don't know whether the 'softness' for mens and ladies are different, or whether it's just me not wanting to corner myself into the 'ladies' equipment.
As for longer distance, try various makes of 'distance' balls. However, they do compromise on shorter yardage controls (chipping, pitching etc)
One inexpensive make I've had success with on both accounts is Nike Soft - World of Golf sells £17.99 for 2 dozen.
Srixon Soft and Distance are also quite good - altho I still prefer the Nike Soft. |
