There is split opinion regarding the benefits (or otherwise) of custom-fitted clubs.

For example, despite a variety of articles claiming they will improve your game, the Professional at my local Municipal course believes that high-handicappers will play just as well with an off-the-shelf set.

I would like to hear from anybody who has invested in a set of custom-fitted clubs.

What was your handicap when you bought them?

How long did the fitting process take?

How expensive was it?

How long have you used your new clubs and, if your handicap has come down what is it now?

Any other information which you consider useful would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Albert Ross

Hi Albert,

Admittedley a lower handicapper will benefit more from fitted clubs but that is not to say that a higher handicapper won't benefit either. Consider that we are all different builds and heights, then it's not reasonable to say that we'd all need to same length of club to start with, that would be like saying a childs shoe size doesn't matter because they are only just learning to walk. More importantly with clubs is the lie angle which can have a dramatic effect on the short irons i.e. if you have the wrong set up your approach shots could be consistently going left of right by as much as 10 - 15 yards, which means your alignment etc. will end up compensating for these clubs.

I had a set of Cobras that were fitted, 0.5 inch longer and with a 2 degree upright lie, which were fitted for me. I then changed them for a better set of forged Mizunos and the shop Pro convinced me not to have them altered i.e. take them as they were - I could not get on with them at all, I felt like my posture had to change at address and hit too many mis-hits. I then went back to a fitted set and got on much beter. Fitting does make a difference, even for higher handicappers, but you don't need to buy expensive clubs to have them fitted.

Hi Monty

Many thanks for your reply, which has given me some "food for thought".

Has there been a reduction in your handicap, which you can directly attribute to you custom-fitted clubs?

Regards,

That is very difficult to say as I've always continued to try and improve my game so it's hard to aportion what the biggest contributors were (other than putting), but I can say that my scores are definately better with fitted clubs as I hit less duff shots and my confidence in using them is so much higher.

Just had my Ping fitting session and wouldn't you know it I'm mr average. Ended up with the same standard set as always. Must admit though when I swing the ping the contact is sweet and effortless more times than with my old nike set.

Hey Monty,

Did you get the impression that the so called golf pro or shop staff just want you to take what they have. I went to American Golf and in my fitting session I had to prompt him about ball flight and grip size and even when some of my swings were showing a variation on the lie he said to go with them as is!

I guess its like they say golf is a game between the ears and just need to make sure what I have got is the right fit for me

Hi Dibbs,

In my previous post I mentioned that I was sold a set of Mizuno that were standard fit which I never got on with, even though the clubs themselve were excellent quality, these were purchased from American Golf and, even though I believed I needed them fitted, they had convinced me to purchase a standard set, which I sold some months later.

I have been to American Golf (different stores) over the years and have never been convinced by their so-called advice, and was left feeling like I had entered a car sales-room. I'd recommend that you find somewhere local to you that does golf fitting, like a golf club or range, and preferably one that uses laser fitting technology to ensure that the clubs you buy a perfect for you, and not just an easy sale for some jumped up 'Golf Pro' in a sports shop. I'm not sure where you are located but there is a great place in Surrey called Sports Coach that has the very latest in club fitting technology, albeit with a limited range of club manufacturers to choose from.

Final word... don't treat the Pros in American Golf with too much respect, bear in mind that their primary role is to sell equipment.

Hi leo,

Be interesting to see if you end up with standard clubs. They told me to have the Ping fit and never even took a measurement!
