From my drive my ball landed under a bushy type tree, the ground around is a mass of rabbit scrapes, it would have difficult to tap the ball out without standing on a scrape. I know the three options available for a penalty drop, but would I have been allowed a free drop, if so where would I have to drop the ball ?

Hi Jim,
This is a tricky one.
If it is pretty obvious you can't actually play a stroke at the ball then you can't have relief.
See the Exception to Rule 25-1b.
So if the bush is interfering with your shot, you have to take an unplayable, R28.

However, if it possible to play a stroke at the ball, then you can have relief.
Find the NEAREST point that is clear of the condition (the animal scrapings) that is not nearer the hole, and is not a hazard, and drop within one club length of that point.

Remember it is NEAREST point of relief NOT best point of relief.
A lot of players don't realise that IF the nearest point of relief is in the rough, behind a tree or even in the middle of another bush, you must drop it there. And you measure NPoR by where the ball will lie when dropped not where your feet are.

Also if NPoR means dropping in another condition (say casual water) you MUST drop it there, and then take approprate relief from that condition. And if NPoR does happen to be another bush, you MUST drop it there, and then take the appropriate relief under penalty.

Hope this helps,
SH.

Hi Jim,

Just to confirm that the response that Shawe has given is correct, however, relief can only be claimed if ball is playable yet the srcape (abnormal ground condition) interferes with your stance or the area of your intended swing.

Shawe: thank you for your accurate, concise response to this question.

EGS
