When playing today i was told that my putting stroke was illegal, I do have a strange way of putting.
First I line myself up and address the ball grounding my putter i then take a short practice stroke not striking the ball then i take another stoke this time striking the ball. today i was told that as i grounded the putter my practice stroke was illegal.

This is the first time i have ever had it questioned, and i am sure that i am not doing any thing wrong.
cant find it covered in the rules,
any comments

Hi Tiger,
How's the knee doing?

This is another one of those situations where your friends are talking complete b*ll*cks.
Give 'em a Rule book and ask them to show you this Rule they invented.

This is what you said:-
First I line myself up and address the ball grounding my putter i then take a short practice stroke not striking the ball ...

This is in the Definitions section near the start of the R&A Rule book.

Stroke
A "stroke" is the forward movement of the club made with the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player checks his downswing voluntarily before the clubhead reaches the ball he has not made a stroke.

What you describe is NOT a stroke, it's more like a waggle. Nearly every player in the world does it, they address the ball and then move the club away once or twice before actually striking the ball. It's not against the Rules, and there is NOTHING in the Rule book that says it is.
Have you ever seen the real Tiger, sometimes he get all the way to the top of his backswing and then stops his swing - NO PENALTY WHATSOEVER, not on the tee, not on the fairway and NOT ON THE GREEN.

You'd better hurry up and get your leg well, Padraig Harrington is winning all your Majors.

ATB,
SH.
