Has anyone had any experance's in using one? If so did it make a difference to your game?

This year the R&A have allowed the use of measuring devices as long as they do not measure anything else such as gradients, temperature, wind speed etc..

These devices are very useful in terms of providing consistent yardages and basically are just an electronic Course Planner, however, for these devices to be of much use the player must have good distance control and know what distance he hits with each club otherwise the device is pretty redundant.

I've spent a lot of time working on distance control and know how far I can hit each of my mid-irons and wedges with different shots but I still don't feel that this device would help improve my game a great deal; having played golf for many years I have a feel for estimating distances which I often trust over the 150/200 yard markers. I think that if you start to depend on such a device for distance control you will lose, or not develop, this useful skill... I guess it's a bit using electronic tills in shops, bars etc. where virtually no one calculates in their mind now.

Having said all that, I recently played in an event where all the buggies were fitted with GPS devices displaying course/hole layout as well as offering distances etc., and, I have to say, I really did quite enjoy using it as it was like having your own caddie with you, it also help to speed to the game up as well as it reduced time to figure out which club to use.

The buggies at Stockwood Vale gGolf Club in Bristol are fitted with GPS and from personal experiance as a 28 handicapper it makes life more bearable with regard to club selection if you know exactly how far you need to land the ball.
I do agree though that they shouldn't be able to measure wind speed etc.

Thanks for your comments.I just feel that it is a erosion of one of the skills of the game of golf (judging distance). And wonder if the next gadget will be a laser that will show you the line to putt on!!!! I might just buy one of those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
