Although I'm a fairely experienced golfer, I've recently developed a problem with shanking the ball, esp when chipping or short pitch shots and I don't know what to do do cure it. It's got to the stage now that everytime I stand over the ball to chip on to the green I can't stop thinking about it.... then it happens again.

Any useful advice would be very very welcome.

Thanks Mark,

The tip was very useful and I've been practising it and now have got very good control over the ball, even managed (by pinching it) to get the ball to bite with short chip shots which enhances control.

I still had some troubles with shanking though but have managed to fix this which I'll explain now. At first I was convinced that the ball was coming off the shank of the club so decided to put a golf tee about 1 1/2 inches from my ball so, if while hitting the ball, I also hit the tee then I will know that my club has gone too far over resulting in the shank hitting the ball. To my surprise while doing this I didn't (couldn't) shank the ball until about the 10th attempt but, by this time I wanted to, just to prove that it was the shank hitting the ball. Anyway, I did shank it and the tee was also struck which convinced me that I was managing to hit the ball with the shank. But I was fascinated by the fact that I was unable to shank it when I had placed a tee in the ground just beyond the ball. It then dawned on me that my swing path had improved as I was consciously, or subconsciously avoiding hitting the tee in the ground.

I know use this method to practice pitch shots around the green and it has proven to be very very effective. Anyone who has very had a bout of shanking will know how destructive it is to your confidence and every pitch shot is approached with intrepidation. Using this method my confidence has fully returned and I have no more worries and, even if I did get one, at least I know how to fix it now.
