I used the back of my 4 iron to hit my ball from under a bush. After I had moved my ball, I was told that what I had done was against the rules. A different member of our group said it was not, and it was fine to use any part of the club to strike the ball. Is it possible to give me a definitive answer please, I am completely confused, as are the rest of my fellow players.

Dave,
You often see the pros tapping a putt in one handed with the back of a putter.

See Rule 14.

4-1. Ball to Be Fairly Struck At

The ball must be fairly struck at with the head of the club and must not be pushed, scraped or spooned.

You can see from this that the only stipulation is that the ball is not pushed, scraped or spooned.
And must be struck with the head of the club.

This is from the R&A book - Decisions on the Rules of Golf.

14-1/1 Playing Stroke with Back of Clubhead
Q. May a player play a left-handed stroke with the back of the head of a right-handed club?

A. Yes. A player may play a stroke with any part of the clubhead, provided the ball is fairly struck at (Rule 14-1) and the club conforms with Rule 4-1.

As you can see as long as it is the head of the club there is nothing in the Rules that mentions how many hands or which part of the head of the club.

No penalty.

Hope this helps.
SH.
