| | usually my line is good but I either end hitting it to hard or too soft, I need to develop a consistent touch, any thoughts? I normally average around 32 putts per round, but know that I could easily reduce this by 4 or 5 shots if I had better control. My handicap is 15 and I'd like to get lower but don't feel this will happen until my putting improves. I currently use a 2-ball putter and struggle more on the longer putts. |

| | Since I first posted this topic last year I have found a brilliant method to improve my putting which has cut 6 shots off my handicap (well, between that and improvded chipping...more about that in a minute). I purchased a cheap auto-return putting machine for £12 and practice about 3 - 4 times a week, or each night for about 3 days before I play. Instead of just putting I have set myself a routine with targets to achieve. I will use only one ball, then start about 3 feet away from the machine and putt until I can sink it and have it returned 10 times; if I miss one, then I start over again. Then I move back another foot then do the same again. If I miss one, I move back to 3 feet then start again. Once I have succeeded at 3 and 4 feet I move to 5 feet but set the target at getting at least 7 out of 10, then to 6 feet with the target being 5 out of 10. This slowly but surely helps you build up steady rythmn to build consistency in your putting stroke, as well as accuracy. It's also teaches you to putt under pressure and completely focuses your mind. When I play on the course putting seems so much easier and the results are significantly better, to the point where I expect to sink everything within 5 feet. The main thing on the greens that I need to focus on is finding the right line. |
