| I was playing on Friday and hit a good drive. It was well hit and would have been in the semi rough on the left of the fairway. You could not have missed it. When we got there it was no where to be seen but another ball was there.
I can only assume that someone played my ball instead of theirs. What is the ruling as the R&A is inconclusive, seemingly going around in a loop between 18.1 and 27.1.
It cost me the stableford competition win. Thanks in advance. Sean |

| Hi mckennas,
Your ball is lost.
Rule 27-1, if it wasn't found within five minutes search.
If another player hit Your ball, that player is regarded as outside agency.
If an outside agency moves or removes Your ball, You may proceed according to rule 18-1 and play without penalty stroke a new ball from the spot, where the original ball had been.
But mind the note in the rulebook concerning Rule 18-1:
Note: It is a question of fact whether a ball has been moved by an outside agency. In order to apply this Rule, it must be known or virtually certain that an outside agency has moved the ball. In the absence of such knowledge or certainty, the player must play the ball as it lies or, if the ball is not found, proceed under Rule 27-1.
Reading Your decription of the situation, I doubt, that there was certanty or anything near that, as long as nobody saw another player playing a ball from where Your ball was supposed to be.
If I were Your opponent in matchplay, You had to go back to the tee and play a new ball for 3.
