| Please settle an argument my friends and I are having.
When do you mark your ball? When you have landed on the green or when everybody is finally on?
Also, is it MANDATORY to mark your ball? The rules only say you MAY mark it with a marker or coin, etc., but we don't see where it says it is mandatory.
What if 1 ball is in the line of put of another? Of course, etiquette says you should - but is it mandatory? |

| Hi epsteinal,
You can mark your ball on the green whenever you wish, regardless of whether your ball is the first or the last to arrive on the green.
The language in any Rule is important, the word 'may' means exactly that, you can if you wish.
The word 'must' is an instruction, and there is a penalty if you don't.
There is a section at the start of the Rule book 'How to Use the Rule Book', the use of different words is explained there.
If another ball is interfering with your play (on your line of putt) on the green, you can request to have it marked, although in strokeplay the other player can choose to play his ball rather than mark it. If you are requested to mark your ball in these circumstances, you are obliged to do so.
Hope this helps,
ATB,
