| Fellow Golfers,
recently during a round of golf, my drive on a par 4 ended up 1 foot right of a tree with some low hanging branches.
I did not have a posiblity to address the ball and playing backwards was not an option. Also standing next to the ball with my back facing the target and punching the ball with the club in my right hand only was not possible due to the low hanging branches.
The only option as to hit the ball with a left handed swing with a 3 iron having the clubhead pointing down..(not my favorit).
I had a proper backswing so that seemed the only solution. However on the end I decided to hit the left handed shot, but hit the ball with the back of my club. I play with mizuno blades and the back of them are fairly flat/straight.
The result was actually quite good. I managed to get the ball forward some 100 yards and back to the middle of the fairway.
My playing partner however, noted that it was not allowed to hit the ball with the back of the club and I should occur a 2 stroke penalty. I know that 2 way chippers are not allowed as in the rules it says that a clubhead is only allowed to have one striking surface (except putters). But I do not think that the boys from mizuno designed my 3 iron for this particular purpose, But my playing partner isisted that officially it was not allowed.
Anyway, he did not wanted me to occur the penalty and we played on... (when I went on to par the hole and he bogied, he wished he had given me the penalty)..
So my question is, am I allowed to hit a golf ball with the back of the club head if the club was not purposely designed to have 2 hitting surfaces.
Looking forward to the responses

| Yes a player may strike the ball with any part of the clubhead.
here is a copy of the decision from the R&A
14-1/1 Playing Stroke with Back of Clubhead
Q. May a player play a left-handed stroke with the back of the head of a right-handed club?
A. Yes. A player may play a stroke with any part of the clubhead, provided the ball is fairly struck at (Rule 14-1) and the club conforms with Rule 4-1.
